Abstract
A scarcity of expert systems for process control is noted and is ascribed to difficulties with critical decisions, safety of closed loop operations, convention, organisational issues and the lack of a pressing need. An overview of closed loop expert systems, mainly in the cement industry, is given, and a system, Linkman, is described. Reasons for its success are discussed, and the system is compared with statistical process control
