Abstract
Substantial experience of using discrete electronic products for control and measurement of domestic electrical load now exists within the United Kingdom Electricity Boards (or Distribution Companies). The authors briefly describe two of these products, one for metering and one for load control. They describe the evolution of a combined electronic kWh meter and radio teleswitch from tried and proven discrete products. The need for, and benefits of, combined two element metering and load control switching are discussed with particular emphasis on the use of this product as a tariff development tool. The combination of multi-rate metering, tariff control, load switching and communications in a single enclosure heralds the first generation of truly intelligent domestic meters
