Abstract
Discussed various important topics in image registration. Special emphasis has been placed on local methods and the issue of computational efficiency. The time factor is crucial, not only in many real-time applications, but also in all applications in which interactive registration is more appropriate and effective. There are a number of questions concerning optimal registration which remain to be solved. The techniques presented in this paper have to be augmented with an application-dependent, high-level, symbolic feature matching. The authors believe that these two approaches i.e. numerical registration and symbolic matching, are complimentary. In an interactive mode how the images to be registered are presented, manipulated and superimposed, has a crucial importance for identification and precise location of control points, and consequently may determine the quality of registration
