Abstract
Discusses the design criteria for building a knowledge-based expert system that will reliably and efficiently identify normal and abnormal anatomical or physiological regions within medical images. Its knowledge system architecture is based on the blackboard model and the reasons for choosing this model are discussed. The main features of such a system have been applied to a prototype expert system for identifying meaningful regions within transaxial nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) brain images
