Abstract
Describes the design and application areas of a real-time front end image processing system. The system is designed to enhance the performance of any general image processing system by providing real-time preprocessing functions. The system consists of a number of hardware processing units which perform their functions in parallel. The processing units make use of versatile memory unit (VMUs) instead of framestores to increase system speed and make possible various novel architectures. The processing units and VMUs are interconnected by a cross-point switching network. The system can process a 256×256×8 bit image at 50 Hz. The output is standard monochrome CCIR video which can be sent directly to an image processing system
