Abstract
Recently, variable block size image coding techniques have been applied in low bit rate image coding applications. However, it intrinsically produces highly visible blocking effects. For fixed block-size vector quantization (VQ), has been devised to tackle the problem. In the paper, a variable block-size interpolative VQ technique is proposed for image coding. Experimental results demonstrate that superior image quality with no visible blocking artifacts at approximately 0.49 bit/pel can be achieved by the proposed scheme. In addition, complexity increase is negligible
