Abstract
The CELLPAC (cellular packet radio) protocol is introduced, and its traffic performance is evaluated. The protocol is based on reservation of slots out of a GSM (Groupe Special Mobile) cellular radio network traffic channel, assigned to the respective service, and supports multipacket message communication between mobiles of a GSM cell. Contrary to the usual way of operation, a base station repeats packets received on the uplink of the CELLPAC channel on the respective downlink, whereby a local-area buslike communication network is established. The protocol has been formally specified in Estelle and applied in a simulated mobile environment
