  • Abstract
The overriding requirements of an excitation system as the operators of a power station see them are reliability, ease of operation and adequate protection arrangements to prevent primary plant damage due to either extreme operational conditions or equipment faults. Secondary requirements are ease of maintenance and dynamic performance of the various closed loops, above that which is required for excitation stability when the generator is on open circuit and that which is required to assist in maintaining system stability
