Abstract
Despite increasing take-up, the growth of email has been slower than predicted, casting doubts on its significance in the workplace. The purpose of this paper is to assess the future role of email, taking account of both the benefits and the problems experienced in the past, and of organisational changes predicted for the 1990s. It focuses on the organisational impact of the medium, as revealed in numerous studied of its use, and the implications of this for the future
