Abstract
Achieving optimum performance for the forthcoming generation of digital mobile radio networks will depend to a large extent on the design of robust communication protocols. A multiple access protocol for use on an integrated, trunked multi-channel private mobile radio (PMR) environment is proposed and its packet delay performance evaluated. The authors focus on issues essential for the design of efficient protocols in a multichannel PMR environment. They put into perspective some limitations placed on protocol design by the mobile radio channel and other hardware design constraints. They look at the requirements of the mobile packet radio network, traffic, channel and hardware considerations for protocol design, and the performance in terms of packet delay
