Abstract
The advent of network technologies such as multi-core/multi-mode fibers and amplifiers as well as multi-band switching can considerably enhance the capacity of optical networks. On the other hand, the introduction of elastic optical switching at frequency and time domain allows for flexible allocation of network resources to deliver higher effective bandwidth and better reflect service requirements. Such systems generate additional degrees of freedom towards en even more flexible optical network. One of the challenges to be addressed in this paper is to leverage such flexibility by introducing node architectures based on architecture on demand (AoD) and to introduce a cognitive control and management system so as to minimize complexity and better handle environmental (users, services, network) unpredictability.
