Abstract
A multidatabase system (MDBS) has been designed for preserving the autonomy of the sites it is composed of. It comprises a multidatabase system for banking applications based on the SWIFT communication system and on the application requirements for a more sophisticated approach. The MDBS is composed of autonomous sites that cooperate on the basis of a modified X.400 message handling system. At the user interface, the MDBS provides the user with a MDBS query language called D-SQL that has been developed on the basis of SQL. The queries expressed in D-SQL are mapped into S-transactions that obey a new concept specifically developed for dedicated decentralized systems. The S-transactions are executed by the multilayered, hierarchically structured, strict modular system architecture
