Abstract
Presents a reasonably simple composite model with two thermal time constants which avoids some of the inconsistencies of the simple time constant models currently used. The proposed model is compared with the most commonly used models and is shown to be able to achieve more accurate arc simulations. An application example is used to show the differences between the two models and how a model can help in evaluation of arc self-extinction limits in a transmission or distribution line. These limits are important for proper choice of compensation reactors, successful single-phase operation, neutral grounding criteria, protection selection, and insulation coordination
