Abstract
It is shown that by applying various mapping transformations to standard multistage interconnection networks, new schemes are obtained which are ideal for the incorporation of optical interconnects. The new two dimensional interconnection networks use light to transport data only over distances so large that electrical communication would slow the system down, and leave electronics to do the rest of the work. An ATM switch operating on many parallel channels at data rates of 1 GHz is feasible
