Abstract
When modeling electromagnetic structures, it is known that no single numerical technique can handle the diversity of all the problems which occur in practice. Therefore several successful attempts have been made to combine the best of each numerical method into one hybrid approach. In this paper we present a technique that combines the finite element method and the boundary integral equation technique for the analysis of periodic two-dimensional structures. This allows us to exploit the benefits of each technique for each region of the structure, resulting in a powerful and general method. The diffraction efficiency of a wedge type structure is used as an example.
