Abstract
The most sensitive receivers constructed for short millimetre and sub-millimetre wavelengths use superconductor-insulator-superconductor (SIS) tunnel junctions as the mixing elements. The authors describe the design and performance of a 210-280 GHz SIS heterodyne receiver, which was commissioned on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope, Hawaii in March 1992. A prototype version of this receiver was tested on the JCMT in May 1992, which was then modified for permanent use on the telescope as a facility instrument
