Abstract
The need for typical usage data in validating software is discussed. Typical usage data is characterised by an operational profile which arises in a usage environment. Two approaches to obtaining an operational profile are considered: permanent instrumentation and expert witnesses. A detailed experiment to assess the in-use reliability of a program is described
