Abstract
Hicom is a conferencing system aimed specifically at the UK HCI Community. The initiative to start the community came from the Ergonomics Society´s information technology special interest group who set up a working group on electronic mail. This made contact with people with similar interests in bodies such as the British Computer Society and the British Psychological Society. DEC donated a Microvax computer and software, including the VaxNotes conferencing software. The computer is housed at Loughborough University by the HCI Service while their Computer Centre provides the data communication interfaces. Computer Science Company has produced most of the associated management and user documentation. Hicom is run by a team of 20 volunteers, from both industry and academia, who communicate mainly through Hicom
