Abstract
An effort is made to integrate, at a theoretical level, the general functionality of a model management system (MMS) with the domain-specific and modeling-technique-specific functionality of a model formulation system. Specifically, the authors integrate, in a theory of model management, a domain theory of LP (linear programming) model formulation. They also provide evidence for the larger claim that such integration will eventually lead to a general model formulation function in an MMS. This claim is primarily supported by a clear separation of the use of domain knowledge from the use of (general) model formulation knowledge in the formulation process, making it possible to apply the model formulation knowledge and inferences to other domains as well
