Abstract
The CADES system was conceived in 1971 as a mechanism for the support of the development of the VME operating system for the ICL 2900 Series (now Series 39) range of mainframe computers. The author outlines constraints and objectives which were identified in the 1979 reflections on the CADES system. He discusses lessons learned from CADES
