  • Abstract
Electric power is the key to the economic growth of any country. Developing countries are faced with gaps between demand and supply of electricity on one hand and rising cost of power generation on the other. Power electronics helps in conservation of electricity and also enables improvement of its quality. India has witnessed a moderate growth in power electronics activities in the past two-and-a-half decades and has built-up reasonable infrastructure towards manufacturing, application and skilled manpower requirement. Economic reforms in the country are opening up new opportunities for larger application. Greater efforts by industry to build-up an internal strength on technology using available resources is now essential to meet these challenges
