  • Abstract
Approaches to the control of the development of software in safety related systems are discussed. A study is reported whose objectives are to survey regulatory practice and trends in a range of application areas and sectors of industry, to provide a basis from which to propose options for improvements. The potential role of certification is specifically addressed. In addition, the position with respect to liability and insurance requirements is summarised. The author concludes by describing the favoured approach being investigated-harmonising existing practice, introducing software-specific, technology-oriented standardisation where appropriate
