  • Abstract
    A description is given of the design and implementation of FToS, a fault tolerant system implemented with a software approach. FToS is a low cost fault tolerant system, well suited to online applications. It is application independent and guides the application in data updates and application startup and shutdown. It follows the approach of redundancy, but unlike conventional redundancy, FToS allows additional hardware to be utilized to its full capacity when there is no failure. The current implementation is on Unix System V.3
