  • Abstract
In order to explain why industry needs the Virtual Centre of Excellence in Digital Broadcasting and Multimedia Technology Ltd. (DVCE) we first have to look at why the broadcasting industry needs to do research. Clearly the issue of the natural convergence between the broadcasting, telecommunications and computer industries is a strong factor influencing any current economic model. However, in order to keep the discussion simple, we first develop a simple model of the broadcasting industry. This shows a simplified value-added chain for broadcasting. It is basically the process of how the general public´s need for entertainment, information and education is satisfied by broadcasting-starting with raw materials, ideas and people. Similar separate diagrams could be drawn for the telecommunications and computing industries and indeed much more complicated economic models developed for how these services might interact in the future
