Abstract
This paper describes a low cost medium voltage (6 kV) synchronous machine drive system. A medium voltage current source inverter is developed, using SCR series. A simple and reliable trigger circuit for SCR series is implemented, by which good isolation performance is ensured and all devices connected in series can be triggered exactly at the same time. A specified controller is designed by using an Intel microcontroller MCS80C196KB to perform all control strategies, and a PLC system is also employed to monitor the whole system. This drive system has been put into industrial applications for about two years
