Abstract
An advanced software tool that can be used in conjunction with MATLAB for the design of 2-D recursive and nonrecursive digital filters of many types is described. The basic theory that supports the proposed software tool is the singular-value decomposition (SVD) of nonnegative real matrices satisfying certain symmetry conditions, and the balance approximation. Prescribed specifications, such as the maximum passband and stopband ripples, the order of the 2-D digital filter, or linear phase response, can be easily obtained
