A multiple case study approach is used to research and clarify a number issues, including: (a) the concept of an SME alliance and its key features, (b) business relationships management in an SME alliance and the role of a broker, and (c) the role of information and communication technologies in supporting an alliance. An initial specification of a technological solution using a service-oriented architecture is given. Finally, the paper discusses innovation management in an alliance regime of peers, and provides recommendations for future research in the form of open questions to the research community.
