  • Abstract
Some methods of augmenting Matlab with programmable digital signal processors (DSPs) and graphics processors are described which provide the capability for fast processing, fixed-point and binary representation and manipulation, and image display. These capabilities are attained by using three separate processors, the Texas Instruments TMS320C25 fixed-point DSP, the TMS34010 graphics processor, and a PC-AT. The graphics processor is used to store one or more full size images, typically the VGA standard 640×480 pixel range, with many other supported formats available. It also serves as a RAM buffer permitting random access of sub-images from Matlab and facilitating reformatting and related operations as well. The signal processor acts as a fast fixed-point coprocessor. Both data and programs can be downloaded and uploaded to the processor from within Matlab, utilizing special Matlab functions written for this purpose. The many Matlab 1- and 2-D functions are used to process images, typically by accessing and rewriting 64×64 pixel blocks in the graphics processor´s frame buffer
