    The moving picture experts group (MPEG) of the international organisation for standardisation (ISO) is defining standards for the digital coding of television at low bit rates. The philosophy has been to develop audiovisual coding standards as early as possible in order to avoid a proliferation of de-facto standards across the different applications. This paper gives an outline of the progress and current status of work within this group
