Abstract
This paper proposes a photovoltaic lighting system based on a power converter that combines the Z-source and the quasi-Z-source topologies. When there is enough sunlight the power converter operates similarly as the quasi-Z-source topology and thus the photovoltaic energy is stored in a battery bank. In the absence of sunlight the power converter operates similarly as the Z-source topology for powering the light source from the energy stored in the battery bank. The reactive components can be shared for reducing weight, volume and cost. Selected experimental results are included to show the feasibility of the proposed system.
