Abstract
This paper presents a different approach for a synchronous reluctance motor design with a radially-laminated rotor. The stator has a standard three-phase induction motor design. The rotor is laminated radially with an anisotropic permeable material leading to the required difference in the d- and q-axis permeance. The finite element method proves to be a powerful tool for the investigation and evaluation of the behaviour. One problem arising with the finite element approach is related to the modelling of the magnetic structure of the rotor as the anisotropic behaviour of the material has to be taken into account. In this paper a number of aspects of the analysis and design procedure are discussed
