Abstract
The performance of a concatenated trellis-coded 16QAM modem is presented for Rayleigh, Rician and shadowed land mobile satellite communication channels. For the concatenated coded modulation scheme, the outer code is a rate of 223/255 Reed-Solomon code and the inner code is a rate of 3/4, 8-state trellis-coded modulation (TCM). Time-multiplexed TCM codecs are used for interleaving and a pilot symbol aided method is used to provide amplitude and phase references to the receiver, in order that coherent detection can be employed. Error performance is compared with TCM 16QAM and uncoded 8PSK systems. In addition to data transmission, the system performance for digital speech transmission is also evaluated by taking into account of decoding delay and interleaving
