Abstract
Full network interconnections will not be possible in this century unless satellite technology is used to integrate networks. The limitations from the lack of telecommunications infrastructure in large or developing regions could be quickly overcome by satellite links joining terrestrial networks such as high bandwidth network islands. With these considerations in mind, the article presents the optimization of an architectural model used to interconnect FDDI based clusters through satellites. The study covers system performance evaluations on the basis of transmission delay. The emphasis is on FDDI clusters rather than FDDI backbones, because this option applies more realistically to the potential needs on satellite interconnection services
