Abstract
Many existing commercial sonar imaging systems for subsea applications are design specific with only one application/deployment mode/array configuration in mind. The authors consider beamforming as a general purpose signal processing problem and the sonar electronics as purely an instrumentation and digital signal processing engine. A prototype sonar utilising this concept is described and the processing requirements of such a design are examined. Both simulation results and real data images are presented to illustrate the possibilities of such a system
