Abstract
Conventionally, oceanographers refer to CTD instruments as measuring conductivity, temperature and depth. In fact all instruments known to the author measure pressure rather than depth. This paper looks at the problems of accurately determining sea-water depth from pressure sensors and the necessary corrections that have to be made for latitude, temperature, salinity and atmospheric pressure
