Abstract
A novel design approach of frequency selective surfaces (FSS) using optimization tool based on real-coded genetic algorithm (RGA) method in conjunction with an electromagnetic solver based on the method of moments (MoM) method is proposed to tune the FSS unit cell dimensions in order to achieve desired frequency responses. The analysis of scattering from FSS screen is achieved by using the Galekin´s method in MoM. The problem of FSS design can be cast into an optimization problem by minimizing the relative error function of frequency response coefficients affected by the optimization parameters. The object function is the relative error between the prescribed transmission coefficient and the simulated one. The validity of the proposed method is demonstrated by an example applying RGA to the design of a freestanding FSS with dipole element. The search robustness and simplicity of RGA are fully demonstrated.
