Abstract
ATM is essentially a connection-based system and not ideally suited to supporting connectionless traffic, i.e., any service that does not have a connection set-up phase separate from information transfer and associations are made on a per-packet basis. In order to support connectionless data services which are likely to be among the first B-ISDN services, special provision is required. This paper briefly discusses the two approaches that can be adopted, i.e. direct and indirect, and then examines some techniques that may be used to improve system performance for the indirect approach
