Abstract
For a number of years, Local Area Networks (LANs) have been proposed as the basic building blocks for military command centres. Recent advances in technology and standardization of protocols have made LAN implementation of command centres the most attractive and most effective of all approaches. This paper describes the LAN architectural model (based on the Open System Interconnect model) used to describe the protocol layers, the choices available at each of the four layers that comprise the transport service, the selection criteria and a recommendation for the set of LAN protocols to be used within Allied Command Europe (ACE).
