Abstract
The transport of lithium batteries is governed in the United States by regulations specified in 49 CFR ∮173.185. Specifications for international air transportation are designated in the IATA dangerous goods regulations. With few exceptions, both of these documents refer to the UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods-Manual of Tests and Criteria as the basis for classifying cells as nondangerous for transport. The UN Manual of tests and Criteria is under review and the proposed changes are discussed in this paper
