  • Abstract
The simultaneous transmission of bursty, high bit-rate sources on an ATM network can cause momentary overloading and subsequent data loss/delay. Since equitable call-charging should take account of these effects (e.g. compensating users for lost/tardy cells), the rates of cell-reception, delay and loss should be continuously and accurately monitored. This information may also allow the network manager to select appropriate bandwidths for the various competing channels. Although the obvious solution is to monitor the progress of every cell, this would require a prohibitively large computing overhead. It is therefore desirable to “sub-sample” the data, i.e. to monitor only a small selection of the cells from which the overall traffic can be approximated. This document reports some simulations and hardware experiments designed to evaluate sub-sampling algorithms
