Abstract
Resolvers are often used to provide accurate absolute position information in high-performance motor systems. In this paper a new variable reluctance (VR) resolver with much simplified structure is presented for integration with motor systems. The new VR resolver directly utilizes the salient pole effects with only simple winding patterns on the stator. Sample tests show that the precision can meet the requirement of the drive of brushless motors, and the position errors are mainly caused by the 3rd harmonics and the noneffective EMFs existing in the signals, which can be eliminated further.
