  • Abstract
The Joint U.S. and Russia Internal Wave Remote Sensing Experiment took place in July 1992 to investigate surface signatures of oceanic internal waves. Instruments on the R/V Akademik Ioffe and surface and subsurface moorings were used to measure the internal wave field on the continental shelf of the mid-Atlantic Bight. The test area was centered at 72.25°W and 40°N. The authors use these data and solitary wave theory to estimate the surface currents and strain rates induced by internal waves. The position of the internal waves and their relative strengths as determined from the towed fish data are compared to those parameters as estimated from the real aperture radar (RAR) and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images.
