  • Abstract
This paper proposed a cross-layer design for transmission of delay-sensitive video over 802.11e EDCA Wireless LAN. There are different access categories (ACs) defined for the 802.11e EDCA at the Medium Access Control (MAC) layer. Each AC has its own queue and uses different parameters to provide differentiated services. We use the queuing delay at each AC queue to control how the video packets can be assigned to each AC. The proposed algorithm dynamically assigns the packets into different access category queue based on the importance of the packets and the delay of each AC queue. The algorithm is designed to maintain the queuing delay of AC queue at a desired value. At the same time it reduces the packet loss of important frames to improve the video quality. Simulation results prove that the proposed approach can improve both the video quality and end-to-end delay for delay-sensitive applications compared with standard 802.11e EDCA.
