Abstract
It is noted that with rapid and dizzying changes and crises in public life have come greatly increased and complex interactions of universities with public affairs. These changes have brought to light old and new questions about the nature of teaching and learning, the obligations to faculty to teaching and research and other commitments, and the impediments to unity of academic purpose and incentives to fragmentation. The problems and challenges for students, faculty, and administrators are explored in light of internal trends and external pressures
