  • Abstract
Summary form only given. We describe nonlinear methods for rate conversion of data packets and pulse compression. Time dilations have many applications and are essential for future optical telecommunications systems and processors. Here, nonlinear compression is achieved by launching linearly chirped pulses or packets into a medium with spatially varying properties (dispersion, nonlinearity, gain/loss, or phase modulation) such as dispersion-decreasing fiber, but with different dispersion profiles than previously reported. Exact analytic treatment is achievable, unlike prior reports.
