Abstract
This paper presents the results of an investigation into the requirements of a surge arrester and surge diverter to protect live line workers positioned in the conductor-earth gap against switching and other surges that may be generated onto the phase conductors. The results of theoretical models of switching surges generated and the associated energy absorption requirements for such an arrester is described in detail.
