Abstract
Summary form only given. In conclusion, the choice of the gain level of the fluoride based Er-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA), along with the background loss coefficient and the pump power level, noticeably influences the power conversion efficiency in the flat-gain regime. In practice, this efficiency can be improved by back-reflecting into the amplifier the remnant pump power, which is important due to the degree of inversion that is required.
