Abstract
The author deals with Southwestern Bell Telephone´s (SWBTs) architectural assessment of self-healing networks in response to customer demand for increased network survivability. She provides a description of SWBT´s SecureNet and self-healing transport network services and the self-healing network architecture deployed. Technical requirements for self-healing networks for the loop and interoffice links using current asynchronous equipment and future synchronous optical network (SONET) equipment are discussed. An assessment of various architecture alternatives using rings and digital cross-connect systems is provided
