Abstract
Uncooled operation of laser diodes is desired because it eliminates the need for thermoelectric coolers, which contribute to poor reliability in packaged fiber-optic transmitters. There have been reports of lasers operating uncooled at high temperatures at 0.98 μm, 1.3 μm, and 1.5 μm. Despite these reports of device operation, there has not been a report of a complete fiber-optic link operating uncooled at high temperatures. In this paper, we present a 1 μm wavelength fiber-optic transmitter as well as a receiver operating uncooled at temperatures exceeding 125°C at bit error rates (EER) of 10-11.
