Abstract
The authors propose and evaluate ITSSO (intelligent tutoring system for satellite operators), an architecture for the design of an intelligent tutoring system for operators of NASA ground control systems. An experiment compared the performance of subjects trained with ITSSO to the performance of subjects trained via conventional hands-on experience. Although ITSSO did not result in uniformly better performance, the study provides a number of important insights into the issues and problems involved in the successful design and evaluation of intelligent tutoring systems for operators of complex systems
